These specialized cells have the ability to create more blood-forming cells or to mature into one of the three different cell types that make up our blood. These include red blood cells (cells that carry oxygen to all parts of the body), white blood cells (cells that help the body fight infections and diseases), and platelets (cells that help blood clot and control bleeding). Signals passing from the body to the bone marrow tell the stem cells which cell types are needed the most.
For people with bone marrow diseases and certain types of cancer, the essential functions of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are disrupted because the hematopoietic stem cells don’t mature properly. To help restore the bone marrow’s ability to produce healthy blood cells, doctors may recommend stem cell transplantation.

In some cases, we can do an aoutologous transplantation which is we take the bone marrow from your own body, but before it’s returned, the bone marrow is cleared of any damaged or diseased cells.
A bone marrow transplant has five stages. Like the other medical procedures that usually been done at the hospital, which is :
- physical examination – to assess your general level of health
- harvesting – the process of obtaining the stem cells to be used in the transplant
- conditioning – preparing your body for the transplant
- transplanting the stem cells
- recovery period –during which you’ll be monitored for any complications or side effects
Having a bone marrow transplant can be an intensive and challenging experience. Many people take up to a year to fully recover from the procedure. Bone marrow transplants are complicated procedures with significant risks. The risk of infection is also increased because your immune system is weakened when you’re conditioned (prepared) for the transplant.
